Section Next

In 2002 the Northeastern Section began its program of Section NExT activities for new and relatively new colleagues. NExT stands for New Experiences in Teaching. By providing talks and workshops on issues of interest, opportunities to meet and share ideas with other new colleagues, and an introduction into Section activities, we hope to assist new faculty in their transition from graduate school to professional academic life.

We welcome all untenured full time faculty, both those who have and have not been National NExT fellows. In addition, although the workshop/presentation is geared toward faculty without much experience in full-time teaching, all are welcome to attend.

The Section NExT activities generally consist of a short program during the early afternoon of the Fridays of regular Northeastern Section meetings. The programs usually consist of a lunch and a presentation. The Section NExT activities are free to all who attend.

new faculty

Designed for new college and university faculty in the mathematical sciences, Section NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a professional development program that addresses the full range of faculty responsibilities including teaching, scholarly activities, and service.

Every mathematics faculty member in the NES who is in their first 4 years of full-time teaching is considered an NES Section NExT Fellow whether or not that full-time teaching experience is as a tenure-track professor. All NES Section NExT fellows qualify for free meals at any regular NES Conference during which they are a Section NExT Fellow. This includes the Section NExT lunch on Friday, the banquet on Friday night, and lunch on Saturday of the conference. If, in addition, a Section NExT fellow gives a contributed talk, their registration to the conference is also free. If you qualify as an NES Section NExT Fellow, please sign up for meals as a Fellow at the time of registration for the conference. If you are also planning to give a talk, please sign up as such when registering for the conference, so you can receive your free registration.
